Last night inside a warehouse at the Night Night 2022 tee shirt and I love this Brooklyn Navy Yard, Christopher John Rogers returned to the runway for the first time since the pandemic. To no one’s surprise, color abounded in the resort 2023 collection’s striped knits, tailored pantsuits, and draped dresses. But it didn’t end there. Nearly every model in the 55-person lineup had a set of bright neon lips painted on by makeup artist Michaela Bosch. “When I look at Chris’s pieces, they always remind me of vintage fashion illustrations—that kind of animated glamour,” explained Bosch backstage. “I wanted to do something inspired by those images.” Ultimately, the pro landed on a velvety matte complexion sans blush or contour, “an almost blank face for a more editorial vibe” as Bosch put it, punctuated by “spiky lashes and sharp electric lips.” For the latter, mouths were saturated in “toxic bright” shades of MAC’s orange Tropic Tonic, fuchsia Candy Yum Yum, and metallic violet Atomized, punching up the bold color story of each look.

In keeping with tradition of the Night Night 2022 tee shirt and I love this last few seasons, hairstylist Naeemah LaFond whipped up an array of graphic and gravity-defying hairstyles. “I’m definitely inspired by the hair I saw growing up back in Brooklyn in the ’90s, from Black hair magazines to my local Black salons,” explains LaFond. Echoing the sets of razor-sharp fringe, there was a slew of intricate spiky knots. “We’ve modernized the style with sculpted spikes and a twisted knot with the banana curl technique,” says LaFond, who used Amika’s Headstrong Intense Hold Hairspray and high heat to cement the styles in place, with layers of Top Gloss Shine spray for that wet-look gleam. Other models wore equally directional styles, from flipped and micro-fringed bobs to straight back cornrow updos accented by spiked pieces. “We’re trying to make the looks cohesive, but also let each model’s personality shine through,” said LaFond.
